North Western Railway Engines by TheCaptainofDerp North Western Railway Engines by TheCaptainofDerp
For my fellow railway whores, drawfriends and Thomasfans, here is a drawing I completed in late 2010 but never uploaded. This shot includes some of the main engines of the North Western Railway from the Railway Series books and television series "Thomas and Friends", drawn by me to be as prototypically accurate as possible.

Included are:

Thomas the Tank Engine (#1)
Edward the Blue Engine (#2)
Henry the Green Engine (#3)
Gordon the Big Engine (#4)
James the Red Engine (#5)
Percy the Small Engine (#6)
Toby the Tram Engine (#7)
Duck the Great Western Engine (#8)
Donald the Scottish Twin Engine (#9)
Douglas the Scottish Twin Engine (#10)
Oliver the Western Engine (#11)
Emily the Beautiful Engine (#12)
Bill the Tank Engine Twin (SCC 1)
Ben the Tank Engine Twin (SCC 2)

Henry's actually supposed to be bigger than Gordon.

Gonna need a source on that. The 5MTs are smaller than the A1s were.

>what is perspective

Henry's front bufferbeam is behind Gordon's in that screeenshot, and it wouldn't matter anyway as I used the real locomotives for reference, not the show models. A Gresley A1/A3 has a length of 70 ft 5 in (21.46 m), whereas a Stanier 5MT has a length of 63 ft 7 34 in (19.40 m) or 63 ft11 34 in (19.50 m), depending on the variation of locomotive built. Which means that either way, Gordon is longer than Henry and is thus the bigger engine, not also including weight, wheelbase length, height, and other variables.

This is the only place on Devienart I've seen Emily.  But soon, all that's about to change

Whenever I brows for Thomas and Friends art, I NEVER see any fan art of Emily.

I've seen quite a bit, though most fans prefer to focus on the "classic" set. I included Emily in my piece because she's been with the series for so long and is so involved with the main crew that she may as well be an honorary classic character.

I've only got one thing to ask now.  Are you familiar with a series called Epic Rap Battles of History?

Like one of those train charts, especially since in that train poster they have some engines that look similar to Thomas and Friends.

I don't get why James is considered one of the Three Big Engines when he's no bigger than Edward.

Actually, by prototype and modification James is a fair bit larger than Edward. It helps to think in terms of weight and gross tonnage, not just length and height. I just did a poor job of illustrating Edward by comparison here.

Point being? Lots of engines are part of the NWR; that doesn't mean I can fit them all on one art piece.

She never has been, but given her position in the television series it seed plausible enough to assign her a number.

Sorry for the delay. If your question is still relevant, my favorite stories are usually the ones involving Duncan, mostly because I think he's the most well-developed character there. I always enjoyed Michael Angelis- since he was at it so long, the series kind of evolved off of his voice and tone.

Now this is the order, that I wanted the new Steam Team to be, but thanks to HIT, Duck, Donald, Douglas, Oliver, Bill & Ben have been left out of the team until (except for so far Donald & Douglas) Duck, Oliver, Bill & Ben have return to the series but still are not on the main character roles like I wanted them to be.

Gah. I've eyed this piece a few times and I finally need to comment. This is so beautiful to me. I just adore the vintage aesthetic you’ve portrayed-- it’s as if I’m looking at a real railway poster from decades ago. Given a series that today has largely forgotten what a “railway” is, it’s so refreshing to see a fan reach back to its roots and recall a more sensible time. How could Rev. Awdry himself not have loved this-- your characters even look like his models! ^^

I’d love to hang this up in my train room. (Emily, perhaps, withstanding. XD)
